4 tips to level up your resume writing skills

Whether you are a fresh grad or an experienced employee, writing or updating your resume can be challenging at times to refresh and keep the content relevant.

According to the HR practitioners at Forbes, these are the areas or elements job seekers can work on to create an interesting and insightful resume to catch the recruiter’s attention.

Customisation

Every job opportunity, company, and industry are unique, and the candidate’s resume and cover letter should contribute relevant information.

Job seekers can indicate special skills and knowledge that can relate to the position and convey his/her interest to show they are right for the role.

Strong communication

Other than work experience, candidates can highlight key strengths or insert an objective statement clearly and concisely. When a resume is well-written, it can spark interest in a recruiter to continue reading.

Also, spelling and grammar are indicators of how detail-orientated a person is. As resumes are not time-sensitive documents, it means the person has ample time to edit and curate the text thoughtfully. So, if mistakes or discrepancies appear, it might not bode well for his/her chances.

Provide the information requested

Photos, essays, questionnaires or even a presentation – these are some of the pre-requisites a potential employer might request for during the shortlisting process.

If a document is missing or the candidate is slow to furnish additional information, it might show disinterest or a lack of ability to follow directions.

If for some reason, you are unable to provide a specific requirement, you can let the recruiters know and not let them think that you forgot.

Let the numbers do the talking

Work experiences are good for giving an idea of what your previous role entails, but it does little to show your actual performance.

Beef up your resume with wins, figures, and metrics to show how your hard work has helped your team or company hit the targets and objectives such as higher productivity, new ideas proposed, increased revenue or clients.
