Easy tips to improve your memory naturally

02 Jul 2020

When work gets busy, it is not uncommon to miss out on an appointment or assignment detail.

Memory decline can be due to many reasons such as genetics, lifestyle, or diet. While we can't control or change our genetic makeup, we can improve our lifestyle and diet to strengthen our minds.

To avoid making a mistake at work due to your memory, why not start exercising your brain with these useful tips as shared by experts and brain coaches.

Eat less sugary foods

The brain is a deeply complexed organ and it needs good food to keep it healthy. One of the big no-no foods that you may wish to avoid is sugar.

According to reports online, a diet filled with sugar can lead to weakened memory and reduced brain volume. Some of these foods can include dairy products like milk and cheese, or refined carbohydrates like rice and pasta.

Try different learning methods

Jim Kwik, a popular personality on Youtube, shares that the best way to rejig your memory is to use different methods.

Through new learning techniques, we can excite the brain and improve memory retention skills. Try a card game or fun game apps to exercise your brain.

Take a break

"I forgot" is a phrase that nobody likes to hear - be it your boss, colleague, or even loved one. And, during a business meeting, saying this dire phrase could also lead to a lost opportunity with a potential new client.

If you have been forgetful lately, it could indicate that you are too tired. By resting your mind, you allow it to recover and give it time to process the details. Just like going to the gym, the body needs to recuperate its muscles to keep going.

One way is to meditate. After doing so, you can be better able to identify the critical priorities and manage your time better.

Pay attention

One of the reasons you could be forgetful is by not paying attention.

To avoid that, you can focus your attention by jotting down notes, asking questions, and participate to stay engaged in the meeting or tasks, especially if it is not an exciting one.

By keeping your mind active, you can minimise the chance of daydreaming and draw your attention back to your task at hand. Also, by paying attention, you can pick up observations which can be useful later on.

Have some chocolate

The antioxidants found in cocoa are known to be beneficial for memory. They are said to stimulate the growth of blood vessels and increase blood flow.

If you are feeling forgetful, try having a piece of dark chocolate.
